New Section Of Route 40 Open

December 2007

Beginning on December 4, 2007 motorists can drive on Redstone Way, which is the new roadway that will provide access to the Mon/Fayette Expressway. The 2.2 mile roadway will be the new Route 40 from the 4-lane stub of Route 40 out of Brownsville, running behind the Brownsville Drive-In and reconnecting to existing Route 40 at a new signalized intersection near the former Gudac Bowling lanes. It will be a 3-lane roadway with a center turn lane to support future development. The new roadway will be signed as Route 40 and the current portion of Route 40 in that area of Redstone Township will be designated as Township Road 555. The new roadway will allow motorists to avoid the traffic lights and congestion around the businesses on Route 40 east of Brownsville.

Redstone Way will be utilized as a detour during the construction of Phase 2 of the Uniontown to Brownsville project when the Expressway is extended westward under Route 40. This same detour will be utilized for short term utility work on Route 40 in January-February of 2008 in advance of the Phase 2 construction. Phase 2 construction will begin in April of 2008 in this area.
