Community Day for Phase 1 of the Uniontown to Brownsville Project.

In conjunction with the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the National Road Heritage Corridor, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and its Construction Manager (TCMS/Maguire) hosted a Community Day on Saturday October 11, 2008. The day was billed as an opportunity for the public to preview Phase 1 of the Uniontown to Brownsville Project in advance of the scheduled October 23, 2008 opening.
Phase 1 of the project extends from North Union Township to Redstone Township. Phase 1 includes the Northgate Highway which connects Routes 40 and 51 to the Expressway near Uniontown and Redstone Way which connects the Expressway to the old Route 40 stub near Brownsville, interchanges at Old Pittsdburgh Road, Searights Road and Redstone Way and a Mainline Toll Facility near the Menallen/Redstone Township line.
The event featured a Family Fun Walk hosted by Steps to a Healthier PA – Fayette County which was held a s fundraiser for physical activity programming in Fayette County. The event also included bus tours, food vendors, informational booths, craft projects by the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania, a Modes of Transportation Parade and free music by the Chris Higbee Project.
Everyone was invited to “Step, Stride, Glide and Ride on the 8 miles of new 4 lane roadway before it opened to traffic. The weather for the day was perfect with sunny skies and the temperature topping out near 75 degrees. By all accounts the event was a big success with an estimated 2000 participants.
